Content Credentials vs EXIF: what stays with your image?

EXIF describes a photo and its capture settings. Content Credentials can hold signed statements about its origin and editing history. Removing file metadata is not the same as proving an image is private, authentic or human-made.

Inspect and clean photo metadataWorking with a PDF?

Five things often confused with one another

InformationWhat it can describeWhat cleaning means
EXIFCamera, capture settings, dates and sometimes location.Supported EXIF fields can be removed from a new file copy.
GPS tagsCoordinates stored in metadata, often within EXIF.Removing these does not hide locations recognizable in the picture.
XMP / IPTCDescriptions, attribution, rights and editing information.Check these separately; clearing EXIF alone is not a full metadata review.
C2PA Content CredentialsSigned claims about provenance and creation or editing actions.Removing an embedded manifest does not guarantee that recoverable credentials disappear elsewhere.
Pixel-level watermarkA signal encoded into the image content rather than ordinary descriptive fields.Metadata cleaning does not target or guarantee removal of this signal.

What a Content Credential can tell you

A credential may identify the tool or device involved and describe creation or editing actions. Some workflows let creators attach identity information. Adobe says its automatically applied Firefly credentials include non-personal creation information unless the creator opts into additional details.

Reading a field, checking a cryptographic signature and deciding whether the pictured event is true are different tasks. A file can lack credentials for many reasons, including ordinary editing or export. Absence is not proof that a file is human-made, and presence alone does not establish that every claim in an image is true.

Does removing metadata remove Content Credentials?

A cleaner can remove supported embedded metadata from the exported copy. That is a claim about that file, not every record associated with it. Adobe documents cloud storage and recovery of some credentials. A metadata-only operation also does not promise to remove watermarks encoded into pixels.

Our EXIF remover describes its supported formats and metadata categories. Inspect the detected fields, save the cleaned copy, and check that copy again. It is not a certificate-trust validator or a universal AI-origin detector. Keep your original when attribution or provenance matters.

A practical privacy check before sharing

  1. Work on a copy and decide what you intend to disclose.
  2. Inspect ordinary metadata for location, dates, names and software fields.
  3. Review the visible image for faces, addresses, screens and recognizable places.
  4. Clean the supported fields, download the result, and reopen the exported file for inspection.
  5. If provenance matters, use a credential verification tool separately. A clean metadata table is not a signature verification result.

Check the file you actually plan to share. A screenshot, conversion or social-platform download can change metadata and encoding in ways that differ from the original. Do not infer another service's behavior from the result of one export.

How this differs from PDF cleanup

PDF document properties can contain an author, title, dates or creator application. Removing those properties does not redact visible names, comments, attachments or page content. Use the PDF cleaner and its scope description for documents, and the photo tool for supported image formats.

Common questions

Does deleting EXIF erase GPS information?

GPS tags stored in the removed EXIF data can be cleared. Other metadata and visible location clues still need a separate review.

Is a file without C2PA credentials fake?

No. Many genuine images have no credentials, and normal processing can remove them. Their absence does not decide authenticity.

Will this remove visible watermarks?

No. Visible marks and pixel-encoded signals are outside ordinary metadata cleaning.

Are my photos uploaded to the cleaner?

The linked photo cleaner processes supported files in your browser. This guide does not require you to select or upload a file.
